English has two Articlesthe and a/anThe is used to refer to specific or particular nouns; a/an is used to modify non-specific or non-particular nouns. “A” or “An” is called the Indefinite Article, because it usually leaves indefinite the person or thing spoken of; as, A Ground, A Cow. “The” is called the Definite Article, because it normally points out some particular person or thing.

Definite Article

If we say ‘The’ before any noun, it means we are talking about a particular thing or person. The definite article is used before singular and plural nouns when the noun is specific or particular.

  • Please close the door.
  • He has been causing trouble since the day he came.
  • Please give me the hammer.
  • The dog that bit me ran away.

Indefinite Article

The indefinite article takes two forms. It’s the word a when it precedes a word that begins with a consonant. It’s the word an when it precedes a word that begins with a vowel.

  • There are 365 days in an year.
  • a girl who was wearing a yellow hat
  • My mother is an honest woman.
  • She is a United States senator.

Let’s try to solve some questions

Find out the error in each of the following Sentences.

Q 1: It is only after (A)/ the war is over (B)/ the people realise (C)/ How bad it was(D)/ No error (E).

 Solution: here the error are on the Part B, use A war instead of The War.

Q 2: He had no (A)/ illusion of being (B)/ either a distinguished writer (C)/ or a editor (D)/ no error(E).

Solution:  here the error are on the Part D, use An editor instead of a editor.

Q 3: The robbers were (A)/ caught just as they (B)/ were about to (C)/ escape from the jail (D)/ no error (E).

Solution:  here the error are on the Part D, remove the before  Jail, and correct sentance is escape from  the Jail.

Q 4: He claim to be a linguist (A)/ but in reality he (B)/ does not know even (C)/ the A B C of linguistics (D)/ no error (E).

Solution:   No error.

Q 5: In the conclusion (A)/ it may be safely asserted that (B)/ the poet preaches some (C)/ moral implicity (D)/ no error (E).

Solution: here the error are on the Part A, remove the before conclusion , and correct sentance is in conclusion,
