English has two Articles: the and a/an. The is used to refer to specific or particular nouns; a/an is used to modify non-specific or non-particular nouns. “A” or “An”is called the Indefinite Article, because it usually leaves indefinite the person or thing spoken of; as, A Ground, A Cow. “The” is called the Definite Article, because it normally points out some particular person or thing.
If we say ‘The’ before any noun, it means we are talking about a particular thing or person. The definite article is used before singular and plural nouns when the noun is specific or particular.
- Please close the door.
- He has been causing trouble since the day he came.
- Please give me the hammer.
- The dog that bit me ran away.
The indefinite article takes two forms. It’s the word a when it precedes a word that begins with a consonant. It’s the word an when it precedes a word that begins with a vowel.
- There are 365 days in an year.
- a girl who was wearing a yellow hat
- My mother is an honest woman.
