Previous Year’s Cut Off

Understanding the previous year’s cut-offs is essential for gauging the competition levels. Typically, for the general category, CAT cut-offs have hovered between 95 to 99 percentile in recent years to secure admission into IIMs. Nevertheless, it’s important to note that cut-off percentiles may fluctuate across different IIMs and programs. The requisite percentiles are usually comparatively lower for candidates belonging to reserved categories such as SC/ST, often ranging from 70 to 80 percentile. The fluctuation in the cutoff is influenced by factors like the exam’s difficulty level and the volume of applicants each year.

The cut-off for the year is posted by CAT days after the exam. It is expected that the CAT cut-off for this year will not dip below the 95 percentile. However, please do remember that cut-offs of top MBA colleges are lower than the IIMs.

Factors Determining CAT Cutoff 2024

The IIM that conducts the CAT exam will release the CAT cutoffs after the CAT results. Here are some of the factors that authorities keep in mind while preparing the CAT cutoffs. Here are the key factors considered by IIMs:

  • The difficulty level of the exam: The cutoff for the year is always inversely proportionate to the difficulty level of the exam.
  • Number of candidates appearing for the exam: The total number of candidates appearing in CAT 2024 will affect the CAT cutoff. As in the more candidates appear for the exam, the higher the CAT cutoff and vice versa.
  • The number of seats available: The number of seats will also impact the cutoff.
  • Previous Year cut-off Trends: Looking into the cutoffs for the previous year will act as a reference point and can help predict the cut-off for this year.
  • Institute Specific Criteria: Each participating institute has its own set of criteria for setting its cutoffs based on various factors.

Conclusion

The CAT cut off is nothing but a set of scores that decides which candidate is eligible to proceed further in the admission process. The further process typically includes Group Discussion (GD), Personal Interview (PI), and Written Ability Test (WAT), etc. depending on the institute.

You must be aware of the cutoff data as an aspirant to ensure you know the desired benchmark for a candidate and it also helps you sort your preferred institute accordingly.
