The CCTV camera was first developed by a German man named Walter Bruch. The first CCTV camera was used to watch the launching of rockets carefully. In CCTV the signals are not openly transmitted, though it may employ point-to-point, point-to-multi-point, or mesh-wired links of communication.

In the early days, video surveillance involved constant monitoring as there was no way to record and store information. With the commencement of reel-to-reel media, the recording of surveillance footage has become possible. But again these systems required changing the magnetic tapes manually. When digital multiplexing was developed, it allowed several cameras to record at once. This led to increased savings of time and money which then led to an increase in the use of CCTV.

Uses

  • CCTV has extensively spread its application in surveillance.
  • Surveillance of public areas, banks, police stations, and crime-prone areas uses CCTV in many areas of the world.
  •  In industrial areas, CCTVs are used to monitor the functioning and parts of the process of the control room.
  • Many cities have extensive traffic-monitoring systems using CCTV to capture congestions, traffic rules violations, accidents, etc.
  • Closed-circuit television cameras are also used as a face recognition systems installed outside the restricted premises.

Nowadays the owner of the company is not required to attend and keep an eye on employees 24*7.  He/she has a provision of monitoring your employees, scanning of goods, and implementing of certain operations like financial statements or operations with cash with the help of CCTV cameras which will transmit the signal directly to your mobile phones. This allows the person to keep an eye on the property regardless of where he/she is.

It’s not only those wanting to add extra security to their homes or businesses that use closed-circuit TV cameras. With the development of smaller CCTV systems, criminals are also using them for surveillance. Criminals have used closed-circuit TV cameras at ATMs to gather important banking information from clients withdrawing money.

UK has the world’s 20% closed-circuit TV cameras installed. In fact, according to the statistics, the UK has 4 million cameras i.e. 1 camera for every 11 people.

Benefits

A growing branch in CCTV is internet protocol cameras also known as IP cameras, which outsold the analog cameras. It is mostly used by the LANs to transmit the video signals across the data networks in digital networks. Again many consumers are turning to wireless cameras.

CCTV cameras are effective at deterring and solving the crime and appropriate regulation on the surveillance of public spaces can provide protection such that an individual’s right to privacy can reasonably be compared to the benefits of surveillance.

However anti-surveillance activists have pointed out the right to privacy in public areas. Furthermore, there may be scenarios wherein a person’s right to public privacy can be both reasonably and justifiably compromised.
